Hill Walking Courses
Hill walking is the perfect introduction to the mountains and the foundation for all mountain activities. Whether you are taking your first steps onto the hills or looking to develop the skills and confidence to venture further afield, our hill walking courses will help you get more from your days in the mountains.
We run hill walking courses throughout the year in Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scotland. Our instructors are passionate about sharing their love of the mountains and have years of experience helping people discover what the hills have to offer. We keep group sizes small so you receive plenty of individual attention and can progress at a pace that suits you.
What You Will Learn
Our hill walking courses cover all the essential skills you need to enjoy the mountains safely and confidently. We focus on practical skills that you can use straight away, taught in a relaxed and supportive environment. You will learn about choosing appropriate routes for your fitness and experience, understanding mountain weather, selecting the right kit and clothing, and moving efficiently over different types of terrain.
Pacing is one of the most important skills for any hill walker. We will help you find a sustainable rhythm that allows you to enjoy long days in the mountains without exhausting yourself. You will learn how to assess your own fitness, judge the difficulty of routes and plan breaks to keep your energy levels steady throughout the day.
Mountain weather can change rapidly and understanding what is happening around you is crucial. We will teach you how to read the sky, recognise warning signs and make sensible decisions about when to continue and when to turn back. Weather awareness is not about memorising forecasts but about observing conditions and responding appropriately.
Building Your Mountain Experience
Confidence in the mountains comes from experience and our courses are designed to help you build that experience in a safe and structured way. Each day on the hills adds to your knowledge of terrain, weather patterns and your own capabilities. We introduce challenges gradually, allowing you to develop your skills step by step.
You will learn to recognise different types of mountain terrain and understand how to move across grass slopes, scree, boulder fields and rocky ground. Each surface requires different techniques and awareness. We will show you how to choose good lines, where to place your feet and how to maintain balance and control on steep or awkward ground.
Group walking skills are equally important. Moving as a group in the mountains requires communication, awareness of others and an understanding of how to support less experienced walkers. These skills are valuable whether you are walking with friends, family or joining organised groups in the future.
Progression and Independence
Our aim is to help you become an independent hill walker, capable of planning and undertaking your own mountain days with confidence. We will guide you through the decision-making process, from choosing a route and checking the weather forecast to assessing conditions on the day and adapting your plans as needed.
Navigation skills are covered on many of our hill walking courses and we can tailor the content to your experience level. Even if you are focusing primarily on fitness and mountain experience, understanding the basics of map reading and route finding will enhance your enjoyment and safety. For those wanting to develop navigation skills further, we offer dedicated navigation courses.
As you progress, we will introduce you to more challenging routes, longer days and more remote terrain. This progression is tailored to your individual development and we will discuss your goals and aspirations throughout the course. Many people start with a weekend hill walking course and return for further courses as their confidence and ambitions grow.
Who Are Our Courses For?
Our hill walking courses are suitable for anyone who wants to explore the mountains, regardless of previous experience. Complete beginners are very welcome and we regularly introduce people to hill walking for the first time. If you have some experience but want to develop your skills, increase your fitness or venture onto bigger hills, our courses will help you take the next step.
You do not need to be super-fit to join a hill walking course. A reasonable level of fitness is helpful and you should be comfortable walking for several hours, but we adapt the pace and terrain to suit the group. If you have any concerns about fitness or mobility, simply contact us and we can discuss which course would be most appropriate.
We also offer private hill walking courses where you can choose your own dates and have an instructor dedicated to you or your group. This is ideal for families, groups of friends or anyone who prefers a more personalised approach. Private courses can be tailored precisely to your experience level and aspirations.
The Dringo Adventure Difference
What sets our hill walking courses apart is the quality of instruction and the stunning locations where we operate. Snowdonia offers an incredible variety of mountain terrain, from gentle grassy ridges to dramatic rocky peaks. The Lake District and Scottish Highlands provide equally spectacular walking with their own distinct character and challenges.
Our instructors are experienced mountaineers who understand what it takes to develop genuine mountain skills. They are patient, encouraging and genuinely enthusiastic about helping you progress. You will benefit from their years of experience and local knowledge, learning not just techniques but the judgment and awareness that come from spending time in the mountains.
We believe that learning should be enjoyable and our courses are designed to be rewarding and fun. You will finish each day tired but satisfied, with new skills, greater confidence and a deeper appreciation of the mountain environment. Many of our clients return year after year, joining us for different courses as their mountain ambitions develop.
Choose from our programme of fixed date courses or contact us to arrange a private course with dates and content that suit you. We look forward to sharing the mountains with you.
