Scrambling Courses
Scrambling occupies that exhilarating middle ground between hillwalking and rock climbing. It is where your hands join your feet in upward progress, where exposure adds a thrilling edge to your day and where the classic mountain ridges and gullies of Britain reveal their true character. Our scrambling courses are designed to build your confidence and competence on this spectacular terrain, teaching you the movement skills, rope techniques and judgement needed to tackle everything from easier grade 1 outings to more committing grade 3 routes.
Snowdonia is one of the finest scrambling destinations in the world. The Snowdon Horseshoe, Tryfan's North Ridge, Crib Goch, Bristly Ridge on Glyder Fach – these are names that stir the soul of any mountain enthusiast. We are fortunate to have this wealth of classic scrambles right on our doorstep, and we use them as our classroom to introduce you to the skills and mindset that will open up a whole new dimension of mountain adventure.
What is Scrambling?
Scrambling is essentially steep walking where the terrain requires the use of hands as well as feet. It ranges from easy rocky sections where you might occasionally reach for a handhold to maintain balance, right through to sustained sequences on steep rock where a slip could have serious consequences. In the UK, scrambles are typically graded from 1 to 3, with grade 1 being the easiest and grade 3 approaching the difficulty of rock climbing. The key difference is that scrambling terrain is generally tackled without the continuous use of a rope, though a rope may be carried and deployed on the more exposed or difficult sections.
This is what makes scrambling both liberating and demanding. You are moving largely unencumbered by climbing equipment, maintaining the flow and freedom of hillwalking, yet you need sound judgement about when conditions, difficulty or exposure warrant getting the rope out. Our courses teach you exactly these skills – how to move confidently and efficiently on steep ground, how to assess the terrain ahead and how to use a rope safely when you need that extra security.
Who Are These Courses For?
Our scrambling courses cater for anyone from complete beginners who have never ventured beyond hillwalking paths, through to more experienced scramblers wanting to develop their rope skills and tackle harder routes. If you are a competent hillwalker with reasonable fitness and a head for heights, you are ready to start scrambling. You do not need any rock climbing experience, though if you have climbed before you will find some of the movement familiar.
Perhaps you have admired Crib Goch from the Pyg Track and wondered whether you could tackle it. Perhaps you have done easier scrambles and want to progress to more challenging routes with confidence. Or perhaps you have scrambled before but always wondered whether you should be carrying a rope and how to use it properly. Whatever your starting point, we can tailor a course to match your experience and ambitions.
What Will You Learn?
The heart of any scrambling course is developing efficient and confident movement on rock. We will teach you how to read the terrain, identify good holds and footholds, and maintain three points of contact as you climb. You will learn how to balance and position your body to move smoothly and securely, minimising the effort required and maximising your control. Good scrambling technique is not about strength – it is about movement, balance and placing your weight in the right place at the right time.
Route finding is another crucial skill. Unlike walking paths or climbing routes with fixed gear, scrambles often require you to pick your own way through complex terrain. We will teach you how to assess the ground ahead, identify the line of least resistance and make sensible decisions about which way to go. This includes knowing when a section looks too difficult or dangerous and having the judgement to retreat or find an alternative line.
For those progressing beyond easier grade 1 routes, rope skills become essential. We cover when and where to use a rope, how to belay your partner securely on mountain terrain, and how to move together on a rope for speed and efficiency on longer routes. You will learn to build belays using natural features and traditional climbing gear, and we will teach you the essential ropework techniques needed to protect yourself and others on exposed ground. Safety and risk management underpin everything we teach, ensuring you can make informed decisions about your own scrambling adventures.
Our Scrambling Venues
Snowdonia offers an unrivalled variety of scrambling terrain, and we select routes to match your ability and the day's conditions. Beginners might start on Tryfan's North Ridge, a magnificent grade 1 scramble with stunning exposure and optional harder variations. The Gribin Ridge on Glyder Fawr offers a longer grade 1 outing with superb views, while the Bristly Ridge provides a step up in difficulty and exposure at grade 2.
For those seeking greater challenges, routes like Crib Goch, the Cneifion Arête on Snowdon or the North Ridge of Tryfan's harder variations at grade 2 to 3 offer sustained scrambling on spectacular ridges. In winter conditions, these same routes become serious mountaineering expeditions requiring a different set of skills entirely, though that is a story for our snow and ice courses.
We also run scrambling courses in other areas including the Lake District with its classic Lakeland scrambles, Scotland's magnificent ridges and the sea cliffs and granite tors of Cornwall, where scrambling takes on a quite different character in the coastal environment.
