Rock Climbing Courses

Rock climbing is at the heart of what we do at Dringo Adventure. Whether you are taking your first steps on rock or looking to progress from indoor climbing to the mountain crags, our rock climbing courses offer expert tuition in stunning mountain settings. We run courses throughout the year in Snowdonia, the Lake District, Cornwall and Scotland, with the majority based on our doorstep in North Wales where the variety and quality of climbing is truly world-class.

Our rock climbing courses are designed to be progressive, safe and above all enjoyable. We keep group sizes small, typically with a maximum ratio of one instructor to four clients, which means you get plenty of individual attention and time on the rock. All our instructors are qualified and experienced climbers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and helping you develop your skills in a supportive, confidence-building environment.

Who Are Our Climbing Courses For?

We cater for a wide range of abilities and experience levels. If you have never climbed before, our introduction courses will get you started with all the basics in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. You do not need to be super-fit or have a head for heights to begin with – we will work at your pace and help you build confidence gradually.

For those who have done some indoor climbing or have been out on the crags a few times, our improver courses focus on developing your technique, building your movement repertoire and increasing your independence on the rock. Perhaps you have been top-roping and want to learn to lead climb, or maybe you climb regularly indoors but feel unsure about transitioning to outdoor rock. Our courses bridge these gaps and give you the skills and confidence to progress.

We also run courses for those looking to refine specific skills such as gear placement, multi-pitch climbing or improving movement efficiency. Whatever your starting point, we will tailor the content to suit your experience and aspirations.

What You Will Learn

The content of each course varies depending on the level and focus, but across our rock climbing programme we cover all the essential skills you need to climb safely and enjoyably outdoors. For beginners, we start with the fundamentals: how to put on a harness, tie in correctly, belay safely and understand basic climbing calls and rope systems. You will learn top-rope climbing techniques and start to develop your movement on the rock, understanding how to use your feet effectively, balance your body and read the routes ahead of you.

As you progress, we introduce lead climbing skills. This includes placing protection such as nuts, hexes and cams into cracks and features in the rock, clipping the rope through this gear as you climb, and understanding how to build and equalize anchors. You will learn about fall factors, rope management and the mental side of leading. We take a gradual, confidence-building approach to leading, ensuring you understand the systems and risks before you commit to your first outdoor leads.

Abseiling is another key skill we teach, both as a method of descent and as a useful technique in various climbing situations. We cover setting up abseil anchors, safe rigging, backup systems and controlled descent. For those progressing further, we introduce multi-pitch climbing where you climb longer routes in stages, swapping belays and managing the rope and gear between pitches. This opens up a whole new world of mountain adventures and classic climbs.

Throughout all our courses, we emphasize movement skills. Good footwork, body positioning, balance and efficiency make climbing easier, safer and far more enjoyable. We will help you develop these through coaching, demonstration and lots of practice on a variety of rock types and angles.

Where We Climb

Most of our rock climbing courses take place in Snowdonia, where we have access to an incredible range of venues. From the roadside crags of the Llanberis Pass to the mountain crags of Tryfan, the Ogwen Valley and the Carneddau, there is something for every level and every weather condition. The rock here is predominantly igneous, offering excellent friction and a vast array of climbing styles from technical slabs to steep cracks and juggy walls.

We also run courses in other UK mountain areas. The Lake District offers superb climbing on volcanic rock with classic routes on crags such as Shepherd's Crag in Borrowdale and the towering cliffs of Scafell. In Scotland, we climb on everything from the granite of the Cairngorms to the rough schist of Glencoe. Cornwall provides a different experience again, with its sea cliffs, granite tors and milder climate making it an excellent choice for winter climbing courses or those seeking something a little different.

Venue selection depends on your ability, the course objectives and the weather. One of the advantages of being based in Snowdonia is the sheer number of options within a short drive, meaning we can always find somewhere suitable regardless of conditions.

Safety and Qualifications

Safety is paramount on all our courses. All our instructors hold relevant qualifications and are affiliated with professional bodies. We use high-quality equipment, carry comprehensive safety and emergency gear, and conduct thorough briefings before each session. We constantly assess conditions, group ability and individual confidence levels to ensure that everyone climbs within their limits while still being challenged and progressing.

Risk is inherent in climbing, but our approach is to manage and minimize that risk through sound judgment, proper systems and clear communication. We want you to return home inspired, skilled up and already planning your next climbing adventure.
